Richard L. Coats died suddenly on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. He was born July 5, 1944 in Lansing, MI, the son of Maynard and Arlene (Simpson) Coats. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years. Richard worked for 30 years as a delivery driver for UPS in Charlotte. On December 18, 1965 he married Carla (Kohl).

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arlene and Maynard Coats and son-in-law, Thomas Scallen. Surviving are his wife, Carla of 51 years; daughters, Theresa Scallen of Dimondale and Heidi (Dan) Telfer of Holt; and grandson, Daniel Scallen. Also surviving are brothers, Gary (Anna) and Alan (Cathy); and sister-in-law, Pam (Dave) Hawkins.

Dick enjoyed traveling, going to auctions, watching MSU sports, the Detroit Lions and Tigers. However, Dick's favorite thing to do was spending time with his grandson, Daniel. Dick loved watching Daniel play sports, jump on the trampoline and taking him to coffee at A&W. Most mornings Dick could be found up to A&W having coffee with his buddies. Family was important to Dick, whenever his family needed him he was there to help. Dick many times would put his family's needs before his own, showing us all what true devotion really means. Dick was a people person, everywhere he went he was meeting new people and talking with them.

Dick's family will greet relatives and friends from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Mason Chapel. Private services for the family will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make contributions to the Daniel Scallen Educational Fund. Messages of condolence may be given at www.grbdmason.com.
